Destiny & Purpose: What's My Why?

Homecoming Weekend 2018
Essay Runner-Up: Minister Gail Pickett

When asked what my purpose was, I was unsure of how to answer the question. My daughter continued to press me concerning my purpose as if she was frustrated with me because the answer did not roll off my tongue as she expected. The truth was I did not know how to express what my purpose was. After my daughter shared her purpose, I was still speechless when she asked again what I believed my purpose was. She sighed and then she asked me "Why do you teach the children"? I told her because God told me to. At that moment is when she was able to make me understand what my why was. My "WHY" is because God told me to.

I get up every morning with the intention to please God because I love Him. And because I love him, I listened to him when he instructed me to impart a foundation of Biblical revelation into the hearts of the Mega Kids. My purpose is to lay down a foundation for the children so that they can develop their own personal relationship with God and stand firm in that relationship as the years go on. A part of developing a foundation in their hearts is teaching them that God loves them unconditionally and nurturing them in a particular way that shows them the protective and unwavering love of Christ. I also have the privilege of teaching them how to worship and praise God through their obedience, giving and acts of love. I pray for them, cover them and show them how to listen for God's voice. I have the honor of making God's Word real to little ears that have huge hearts.

I believe that God chose me for this purpose because he groomed me for this. God has been able to use my family as a real-life example of His love; and because of that, it's easy for me to nurture little ones. I did not start my purpose in a children's ministry. My purpose began with my children. God gave me unique qualities that made it easy for me to lay a strong foundation for my own children. I taught them that no matter what comes their way, hurt, pain, heartache or triumph, God is still God and he will always love you. The importance of having God's love inside of you was the thing that I stressed the most. I also taught my children that prayer could get them through any and everything. I had to be diligent; and I had to have the tenacity to pray them through situations which caused me to be strong enough to pray for all the children that come through the Mega Kids children's ministry.

I know that I have yet to reach my full destiny, but I know that I am walking through my purpose with the grace of God leading and guiding me through every step. God knows that if I start a task, that I will finish it in excellence and that's why He has trusted me with the children. He knows I take Him at His Word and He also knows that I don't play games with His Word; therefore, He trusts that I will not lead His children astray. Over the years I have remained faithful to His Word and His calling on my life. There have been times that I could have walked away from all of this, but because my God is faithful and He loves me, I remain obedient to the call I have on my life. I have been graced to teach His Word. Not many people can say that, so I am honored that God chose me for this purpose.
